Hotel Me • 1993 to March 20, 1999
Before my website, I tortured people with my diary in newspapers. The name was a reference to a Juliana Hatfield lyric, of all things, and was suggested by Beth. Prior to Hotel Me's run, I had submitted comics with random names, but found the lack of cohesion to be uninspiring. First appearing in my local community college paper, Hotel Me spread to my four year college, and eventually ran until I got too busy with studies to continue. The format was 1/2 tabloid, and appeared every other week. The last few years or so saw my belated computerization, and some grayscale colors crept in.
These comics have been scanned from the original drawings, which were created at about a 20% larger scale than what eventually ran - about 11" x 17" each. I drew each one with Rapidographs and framed the panels with Chartpak AD markers. Mistakes were corrected with White Out and drawn over. Finally, the Xerox machine at Art Things would shrink the comic down to 1:1 scale, and this was handed to the paste up artist on the day of the deadline.
For the internet, I have done some light editing (mainly excising mention of my ex-wife) and added a little splash of color on the last few that were more heavily computerized. The few sporadic panels that contain photos are recreations of panels that contained the same photos, albeit in horrid xeroxed facsimilie. Where possible, I used the original art, or original paste ups from the digitized printouts.
