A.F.S. Mk.II Originally released in 1984. Kit #01 There is a 1/20th kit currently available from Nitto. This was the first kit released by Nitto in the SF3D line, as it was the first model featured in the pages of Hobby Japan. Yokoyama-san used a Takara Micronaut as a base for the original scratchbuild. The armor was made from ping pong balls. Hobby Japan ran an article showing pictures of the production molds and Yokoyama-san's design process. This was a trendsetting article, and even though the kit was a few months late in coming to market, was highly anticipated and successful. Sales of Micronauts increased after the article was published! This was perhaps the best quality sci-fi kit released at the time, with superior engineering and fit. The kit legs are longer than the scratchbuild (and I believe the body is wider than it should be), so to be accurate to the original, these parts need to be modified. A.F.S. stands for Armored Fighting Suit, developed from a design by a mechanical engineer named Frele Flumer which I think was originally designed for farm work. The prototype AFS attacked the armed transport troops of Strahl forces in mid-June 2883. It was the first success for the AFS design, in combat. Armored Fighting Suits use armor made from tungsten steel and carbon reinforced resin. I assume these are heat-resistant. They sport a laser gun on the left arm, and a total of 20,992 units were constructed. Mercenery troops manufactured the AFS as a main weapon until the Super AFS was completed in December 2883. |
